Upgrade Your Phone to Improve Your Job Search

Upgrade Your Phone to Improve Your Job SearchUpgrade Your Phone to Improve Your Job SearchConsider upgrading your mobile device to a smart phone to demonstrate your tech savvy and continue the job search on the go. Week 3 of New Year, New You.The past two weeks weve worked on upgrading your look and re-engineering your resume to get past the digital gatekeepers. This week I want to focus on a tool you might elend have considered as part of your job-search arsenal until now your mobile device. With all the advances in technology, we now have the ability to work remotely from almost anywhere in the world. That also means were expected to be more responsive when someone reaches out to us on the phone, via email even through a message on a social media site like LinkedIn or Facebook. Owning a phone that allows you to not only communicate via email, but also utilize websites and apps with ease should be a part of every job seekers strategy. Below are five reasons why you should consider up grading your phone to upgrade your search.Dont be dated by your phoneShowing up to an interview with something other than a smart phone is as bad as mentioning your account on MySpace or using an AOL email address it dates you. While you dont need to be an early adopter (unless your work requires it), you do need to stay far away from any outdated technology that makes you look out of touch. This is even more important if youre facing age discrimination in the job search. Have an interview tomorrow and no time to upgrade your device? Be sure to keep your phone hidden away and remember to silence or turn it off before you reach the employers office building.Respond to recruiters right awayIf a recruiter reaches out to you requesting your resume, you need to be able to respond immediately not when you get home later that night. The ugly truth is that youll be forgotten moments after the recruiter hits the send button. Thats the beauty of owning a smartphone or tabletcomputer you ca n store a copy of your resume on the device, allowing you to forward your resume on to a recruiter or networking contact at a moments notice. This is especially helpful for those of you who are employed and searching on the sly this way, you can be responsive at the office while avoiding the risk that comes with using company equipment for your search (a big no-no).Theres an app for thatEach day more and more businesses are coming out with apps to support their mobile customers. If you still think of fried calamari when someone talks about their favorite app, youre in trouble. Check out the companys website and apps as part of your interview prep. If youre targeting tech companies, its almost guaranteed theyll ask about your favorite websites and apps, as it helps them figure out if youll be a good cultural fit for the organization. Take a look at your phones app store anddownload a few to test out. My new favorite is HootSuite, which is completely free and helps me manage my Twitt er and Facebook feeds. Click on the following link to view some of my favorite apps for managing your career.Maintain a mobile searchIve said it before and Ill say it again searching for a job is a full-time job. fruchtwein experts recommend spending anywhere from 20 to 40 hours a week on the job search, depending upon your employment status. And thats just for your job search I know youre all juggling a number of other priorities at the same time. A mobile device can allow you to take what was once consider downtime and turn it into valuable job-search time. Stuck in a long line at the grocery store? Pull out your iPhone and use Ladders free app to identify job matches on-the-go, discover new job opportunities, and scout out the competition.Commuting to the office? Start drafting cover letters or messages for your networking contacts during the train ride.Opt for a budget-friendly optionIs a new device out of your budget? Use sites like eBay to purchase an older version of the iPh one or Android. You dont need the latest iPhoneto reap the benefits I mentioned above. You can also check out sites like Wirefly, TechBargins, and Everbuying.com for discounted mobile devices and tablets.Consider how a smarter phone could make your job search more efficient and do a little window shopping this week. This is how to make a very memorable introduction

This is how to make a very memorable introductionThis is how to make a very memorable introductionFirst impressions can set the stage for your interaction with a client or coworker - or even a whole conference room of people. You want to come across as memorable, friendly and respected when you offer a few lines about yourself, so how can you nail it every time?According to a Princeton study, people can form judgments about others inunder one second, and thats just based on appearances. At first glance and with the following introduction, you have a short time span to establish how others see you. Here are six ways you can introduce yourself so that people remember you.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more1. Describe yourself and why you matterYou might be tempted to give a canned response when someone asks you about yourself and what you do. Dont fall into the trap of responding qu ickly to get it over with. Rather than stopping after your personenname, title and location, keep your introduction going with significant details about yourself.Communicate your value to new people, whether youre in a meeting or networking. Go a little further than sharing information that an acquaintance could also rattle off about you. Explain your experience, give a summary of your past accomplishments and present your current goals. In the workplace, this strategy will help people recall your name and face later on.2. Distinguish yourselfWhen you work in a setting where new people drift in and out, you might begin to tune out the basic details of an introduction. And the people you meet operate in the same way. Listening is aunique concentration skillthat falters when information is repetitive and begins to blend together. Set yourself apart from other introductions by grabbing peoples attention.Break away from the repetitive or predictable pattern that most people use during a first meeting. Include why youre passionate about your position and what you hope to accomplish through it. If youre meeting with a client, tell them what you aim to do for them and why youre different from the competition.3. Watch your body languageYour body language can impact someones impression of you just as much as your words can. People make judgments based on posture and gestures, and you probably dont pick up on these habits and behaviors in the moment. Strive to maintain eye contact and comfortable but straight posture during an introduction.Fidgeting, crossing your arms and interrupting can be perceived negatively, especially during an introduction. You can be remembered for the wrong reasons in this case. In the workplace,be aware of negative body languageso that you can redirect your actions for a better impression.4. Bridge cultural gapsIf you work with people from multiple backgrounds and cultures, you need to consider how your actions come across. In a diverse setti ng, you can prepare to interact with people in a polite and intentional way. Whilethere are no universal manners, you can show kindness and positivity in your interactions.Research international and regional differences so that you dont accidentally offend or miscommunicate during an initial meeting. Cultural gaps arent easy to bridge, so thoroughly prepare before you introduce yourself.5. Practice beforehandSpeaking to yourself in the mirror or to a nearby pet may leave you feeling silly, but you can gain confidence when youve prepared a polished introduction. Repeating the right posture, gestures and verbal introduction can improve your performance. You can effectively make a memorable impression bypracticing in front of an audience, even if its a small one made up of just your friends or family. Preparing your interesting opening lines can reduce nervousness and uncertainty.6. Consult your innerhalb circleIf youre struggling with what intriguing facts you can share with new acquai ntances, ask those closest to you. Sometimes your coworkers, friends and family can identify your strengths better than you can. Also, ask for honest feedback from your inner circle. Open the floor to hear how you can improve your introduction and make yourself more appealing. You canbenefit from accurate feedbackwhen you implement it at your next meeting.7. Be sincere and follow upEven though practice is helpful, keep your introduction authentic. One quality that people identify quickly on the first impression is trustworthiness, so your sincerity can increase your chances of being remembered.Follow up with the people you meet so that you can lock down your face and name in their memory. This strategy, also known as the mere exposure effect, aims for creating anincreasingly better opinion of youwith more interaction. This article originally appeared on Punched Clocks. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Additive Manufacturing with In Situ Resource Utilization on Ex...

Additive Manufacturing with In Situ Resource Utilization on Ex... Additive Manufacturing with In Situ Resource Utilization on Ex... Additive Manufacturing with In Situ Resource Utilization on Extra-Terrestrial Bodies2018 Arthur L. Williston Medal Winning Paper AbstractBy Noah M. PurdyCrewed exploration of space is moving beyond low Earth orbit towards the exploration of the Moon, Mars and beyond 1. However, space exploration is expensive, especially deep space missions. Despite dropping launch costs and the introduction of reusable boosters, transporting massive, bulky supplies and equipment to the Moon, Mars, or beyond is a huge obstacle to the future of spaceflight. One way to bridge this obstacle is In Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU), which makes use of werkstoff already at or near the destination to reduce the amount of material and supplies that need to be taken from Earth. Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a likely way in which in situ resources will be used. By looking at curren t academic research and industrial development, this paper explores how additive manufacturing using in situ resources may be the key to unlocking the next stage of human space exploration. In theory, ISRU is simple enough, instead of bringing supplies with you to your destination, use what is already there. But when it comes time to determine the logistics and technical details, it can quickly turn into a complex challenge. Therefore, the simplest ISRU systems should be the first to be employed. These will likely harvest water and fuel by collecting regolith with a rover and heating it to extract the water, which can then be converted to hydrogen, oxygen, and even Methane 2,3. However, for long term exploration, more complex ISRU systems must be developed, to allow for the construction of infrastructure, such as habitats, solar collection, greenhouses, vehicles, and workstations. These structures are made up of many different materials, so for an extra-terrestrial manufacturing syst em to be practical, it would need to produce components in a wide range of materials for various applications. The best technique that allows for the efficient manufacturing of components from a wide range of materials is Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, where components are constructed layer by layer. Of the seven main types of AM, Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) and Material Extrusion (ME) appear to be the best methods for use on extra-terrestrial bodies 4.PBF consists of a focused energy beam that selectively heats up areas of a thin layer of powered material, to either melt, fuse, or sinter the material together. It can use a very wide range of materials, including plastics, metals, and some ceramics. Precision and surface finish are dependent on layer thickness, energy beam thickness, and energy beam accuracy, but generally very detailed parts can be produced, with respectable material properties and a fine surface finish 5. In extra-terrestrial environments, the re are several potential materials that could be used with PBF. One of the simplest is to use the Lunar or Martian regolith itself with no modification 6. For more detailed components, metals such as aluminum and iron could be used, as they could be refined out of the regolith on both the Moon and Mars 7.The second method of AM that has potential is ME, which consists of a gantry mounted nozzle that extrudes material to create each layer. It can function with most materials that are softened when heated, such as thermoplastics, or any fluid material that cures or hardens over time, such as concrete. A potential material for ME manufacturing on Mars is polyethylene, either in the form of high density polyethylene (HDPE) or low-density polyethylene (LDPE), which can be produced from carbon dioxide on the Marian surface using the Sabatier and the modified Fischer-Tropsch reactions 8. Lunar and Martian regolith might also be able to be used directly as a building material for ME, with t he addition of a binding agent 9.A potential problem with relying on additive manufacturing for a significant portion of the infrastructure of an extra-terrestrial mission is the long cycle times. Even with the fastest AM techniques, printing a significant quantity of material could take a significant portion of the 12 to 18-month duration of a mission 10. In addition to this, if the infrastructure is intended to be built prior to crew arrival, it must operate independent of humans. However, most current or proposed AM architectures are based around a human user. To truly develop useful AM technology on extra-terrestrial bodies, full automation is necessary to both increase efficiency and to allow the fabrication of components in the absence of humans. There are several companies currently pursuing Earth-bound automated AM systems. Voodoo manufacturing, which operates over 160 off the shelf, ME desktop 3D printers, has recently begun the task of automating some of their processes, wi th the desire to eventually automate their whole factory 11. They purchased and integrated a robotic obere extremitt to reduce human bottlenecks, which increased productivity threefold 12. Another company, Formlabs is working on a similar setup, but taking it a step further. They are creating an automated work cell that consists of five, off the shelf, desktop 3D printers, a robotic gantry manipulator, and a post-processing station, which promises to produce finished parts with no human interaction13. NextgenAM Project, a joint venture between AEROTEC, EOS, and Daimler AG, are taking a slightly different approach. Instead of trying to automate an AM machine designed for human operators, they are working to integrate the automation and AM into one system14. While Voodoo Manufacturing and Formlabs are focused on ME AM processes, designed to mass produce plastic components, NextgenAM is looking to produce anywhere from single prototypes to medium batches of PBF metal alloy parts. To cr eate an effective AM system on an extra-terrestrial body, both methods should be included, ME for plastics and polymers as well as PBF for metal alloys. Noah M. Purdy The University of Akron, Akron, OhioIn conclusion, in situ resource utilization will play a key role in crewed deep space exploration, and additive manufacturing will likely be the best way to implement it. However, before this can happen, further development is necessary. The first problem is determining how a feedstock for an AM system can be extracted from in situ resources. Potential solutions include using the regolith directly with little or no processing, adding a liquid binder to the regolith, or refining the regolith to extract metals or polymer compounds. The second problem ISRU using AM faces is the difficulty of automation. A system on an extra-terrestrial body will need to be set up and made fully function, independent of a human interaction, and then continue to run for months if not years. ISRU is a key technology that needs developed before mankind extends its reach to extra-terrestrial bodies, and AM will likely play a key role in that development.ReferencesAdditive Manufacturing Research Group, Loughborough University. Know Your Greatest Strengths

Know Your Greatest StrengthsKnow Your Greatest StrengthsResearch says those who capitalize on their inherent strengths are mora profitable and more productive. Find out which are yours and how to put them to use. Each of us has particular strengths talents in thinking, habitual ways we approach problems that give us energy to solve them. Research of more than two million people by the Gallup Organization has shown that organizations that capitalize on individual strengths are more likely to be profitable and productive than others. Can your work be more productive (and lucrative) if you leverage your strengths?Focusing on fixing individual weaknesses creates mediocrity instead, recognizing varied talents, encouraging them through training, then leveraging them to overcome challenges is the basis for excellence and fulfillment. Heres a perfect exampleSteve was a high-powered executive in the energy industry who recently was laid off. When we examined the reasons he was let go and compar ed them with an assessment of his talents, he realized that he had failed to bring to the job one of his greatest strengths - empathy.Raised in a British boarding school, Steve had been taught that it was weak to be so feelings oriented. In the workplace, however, understanding colleagues feelings can be an important quality that lends cohesion to a team. Its also a useful warning gauge when a company is in trouble.I knew what everyone was feeling and so could have positioned myself better, but I ignored the information, Steve admitted. If he had leveraged his empathetic talents, he might very well still have a job.Recent discoveries in neuroscience help explain why different people solve problems so differently. When were born, our brains have the potential to fire in any direction. Through relationships, experiences and genetics, they begin to fire in certain patterns. Because the brain cells that fire together wire together, they begin to make pathways the next time you think, y oure more likely to think again in that particular sequence. Then, during puberty, your brain sheds the capacity you havent used. By the time youre an adult, your brain is wired to think in certain ways, which is why using your talents creates excellence because you can do it faster and better than people who havent been thinking that way their whole lives. However, as Steve discovered to his detriment, we often cut ourselves off from our own special abilities. We may be focused on our flaws and unable to perceive our strengths. Or we may take them for granted. Or, like Steve, we may harbor pre conceived ideas of the right way to think and therefore disable ourselves. What are your strengths? There are many ways to understand your strengths. At Professional Thinking Partners, we often focus on domains of competence, which describe four broad categories of thinking. (Once you hear what they are, its pretty easy for you to intuit which your mind typically uses.) Research by Herrmann zwis chenstaatlich of a sample of over half a million people has found that 60 percent of us have two of these four 30 percent have three 6 percent have one and only 4 percent, all four. They areAnalyticConcerned with data, facts, and numbers focused on being logical and rational. With money, concerned with ways to count. With time, concerned with the present.ProceduralConcerned with processes, operationalizing, logistics, tactics. With money, concerned with ways to save. With time, concerned with the past, with how things have been done previously.RelationalConcerned with feelings, morale, teamwork, helping people grow. With money, concerned with ways to help. Time isnt so important.InnovativeConcerned with newness, possibilities, strategy, big picture. With money, concerned with ways to spend to do exciting new things. With time, concerned with the future.Notice your strongest domain(s). Which are your concerns in any given situation? Are you, like Ruth, energized by change, bored by n umbers and routine, highly innovative and have no use for people problems? Shes one of the 6 percent of the population strong in just one domain (in her case, the Innovative one). Or are you more like Dan great at numbers and following routines and highly uncomfortable with feelings and newness (analytic and procedural)? There is no right or wrong. Just notice whats true for you.Your dominant ways of thinking are the raw materials you bring to every situation in which you find yourself in. The more you put yourself in situations where theyre needed, the better youll be at the task. For instance, you probably dont want me to be the brainstorm person in product development, as I lack innovative thinking. But Im great at partnering with people who come up with the big ideas and helping them bring the idea into reality with my analytic, procedural and relational talents.Stuck? When youre stuck, ask yourself If my strength in ____ were a person, what would s/he advise right now? When Steve did this self-analysis, he realized that he was extremely strong at relational thinking but had been trained to avoid it. In effect, he was cutting himself off from his greatest capacity. He began to give himself permission to use his strengths and quickly found a job using his amazing capacity to relate to others. Now hes using those strengths to excel in a very challenging job fraught with all kinds of cultural and religious sensitivities in the Middle East.

This morning routine will make you a better parent, entrepreneur, person

This morning wissen will make you a better parent, entrepreneur, personThis morning routine will make you a better parent, entrepreneur, personThis morning, I got up at 5 a.m. and was going to immediately abflug working on a project. As an entrepreneur, writer, and father of five?- ?I have far more to do than time in my day.But instead of jumping immediately into one of my many projects, I decided to give myself some space. There are certain high-performance habits that ensure youll operate at a 10x higher level than if you simply just get to work.Success is not about how many hours you put it, but the quality of those hours. In the book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey explains the importance of sharpening the saw. Most people go throughout their days as a dull saw, putting more and more time in but getting little back from that time. Its really not about how much you work. Its not about how much effort you put it in.Its about the quality and precision of your effo rts.For example, there are millions of blog posts written every single day. But 99.99% of those blog posts will be read by less than 10 people. On the flip-side, some blog posts are read by millions of people. Most people operate throughout their day putting lots of time and energy in. But they arent actually getting better at what they do.In the book, Turning Pro, Steven Pressfield said something brilliant. He said, Addictions embody repetition without progress. They produce incapacity as a payoff. Most peoples days embody repetition without progress.Every day they live, but they arent actually getting better. Their future is a repetitious reinforcement of the past. But theres another schwierigkeit in most peoples days beyond repetition without progress, and that is that most peoples days are quite aimless. They arent being guided by a higher power?- ?or by the highest power within themselves?- ?to do the right things in a powerful way with their time.In other words, most people reacti vely respond to the demands of their day. The urgency of everything takes over and its not apparent that their daily efforts really moved the needle. Its not apparent that their efforts really made a difference.10-Minute Morning RoutineThere are many applications to morning routines. However, there is one thing that is essential to a morning routine to ensure you spend your time on the best things, and that your efforts are impactful on those best things.Said again?- ?your morning routine should ensure youre spending your limited time on the right things. But also, your morning routine should be a process of putting yourself in the right frame of mind to execute at your highest level.Actually, if you tap into the spiritual and subconscious, you can put yourself into a position where you are executing beyond your highest level on a daily basis. Where your efforts are expanded by a higher power. Its really simple. Before you jump into anything else, give yourself some space. Your compul sion will be to get moving on the urgent.Dont do this.Give yourself space for the important. The 80/20 rule is a productivity principle explaining that most of the things you spend your time doing arent really making an impact.80% or more of your results come from 20% or less of what you do.Yet, you continue spending 80% or more of your time on the stuff that doesnt really matter.Giving yourself space?- ?even 10 minutes?- ?allows you to think clearly about your goals. To think clearly about your priorities. To think clearly about what matters most to you. And to think clearly about where and what you should be putting your energy into that day.If you have kids or a morning job?- ?then you should wake up before your kids wake up. I have 5 kids. I know what it feels like to be woken up to my kids being awake. In those instances, I dont have 10 minutes to get my head and heart in the right place. I just have to get up and get moving. And when I do this, Im operating like the millions of blog posts that wont get any reads.Im going to be working but ineffectively. My kids deserve better.I deserve better. You deserve better.Your kids deserve better. The purpose of life is to advance forward every single dayIn the book, The Laws of Lifetime Growth, Dan Sullivan and Catherine Nomura have 10 amazing laws. One of those laws is to always make your learning greater than your experience. Heres specifically what they way about thatYou can have a great deal of experience and be no smarter for all the things youve done, seen, and heard. Experience alone is no guarantee of lifetime growth. But if you regularly transform your experiences into new lessons, you will make each day of your life a source of growth. The smartest people are those who can transform even the smallest events or situations into breakthroughs in thinking and action.Every day, your life should be improving.Your decision-making should be improving.Your skills and intelligence should be improving.Your ability to pr ioritize and focus your time on those things which truly matter?- ?there and then?- ?should be improving. But in order to improve, you need a process for putting yourself in the right place. How you start something usually determines the direction and quality it will go.Take 10 minutes before anything else to get yourself in the right place, and to ensure you focus on the right things that day.Heres a simple outline of how you can do it. But I recommend you develop your own system over time.Wake upDrink some water (your brain will thank you)Go to a quiet or peaceful placeSay a prayer or do some form of positive meditationIf you decide to pray, ask God (or whatever you call the higher power) to inspire you with clarity, discernment, and direction for what you should be focusing on that dayAfter your prayer and meditation, pull out your journal and answer a question?- ?Sean Stephensen, the famed speaker and therapist explains that journaling is often more effective when answering a ques tionYour journal entry, then, could be you free-writing to the question What should I be focused on today? Here are some other questions you could answer as journal-prompts Who do I need to show up for today? How can I be most helpful? What needs my attention most? What is currently on my schedule today that I should uncommit to?Answering these types of questions gives you a little space to open your mind to clarity. You really dont need that much time. You can get life-changing and SIMPLE clarity in a few seconds. The problem is, most people dont give themselves those seconds. They rush forward. Those few seconds will come consistently and daily if you make time for them. But you need to create an environment and a mindSET?- ?your set and setting?- ?that can create powerful insights.Once youve nailed down what you should be focused on, the second half of the journaling session and morning routine is about COMMITMENT.You want to commit to yourself that you will execute. That you will fol low-through. That youll operate at the highest level. You need to make a definitive decision about how the day will go. When you make a decision the universe conspires to make it happen. Therefore, your morning routine is about getting clarity for the decisions you should be making, and then truly committing to making those decisions real.Ready to upgrade?Ive created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. Heres how to know if youll be successful

Here's how to know if you’ll be successful Here's how to know if you’ll be successful Life is complex and messy. It can be extremely difficult to get traction, let alone find motivation. But motivation is something you can learn to create at will. Becoming deeply passionate is also within your creative control. As a result, you can completely predict your own success. You can choose to become as successful as you desire. Here’s how:1. Turn success into a game, not a grind“Life is a game, play it.” - Mother TheresaWe hear a lot about people “grinding” these days. That sounds awful! Grinding day in and out is a path to burnout and misery. The best performers in the world don’t grind, they game! For example, Warren Buffett became good at selling because as a child he would go door-to-door selling chewing gum. But he wasn’t focused on making money. Instead, he was fascinated trying to figure out which flavors sold best. Even back then, he was trying to make predictions. He’s still playing the same games.According to author, Daniel Coyle, “If it can be coun ted, you can turn it into a game.” Rather than “practicing” in a tedious and boring way, you’re far better-off turning your practice into a game. This is why CrossFit is so successful. There are objectives - where you start and complete new challenges.I recently had this experience learning Spanish on the app, Duolingo. I started seeing how many objectives I could complete in a single day, and how many days I could compete challenges in a row.2. Know that you can succeed“Ignition (n): The motivational process that occurs when your identity becomes linked to a long-term vision of your future. Triggers significant amounts of unconscious energy; usually marked by the realization: That is who I want to be.” - Daniel CoyleThere’s a moment when you see what you want and a voice organically speaks within you - “I could be that.”This experience is pivotal! How could you ever become an Olympic Athlete if you didn’t at some point see it and believe it in your mind?Put si mply, you need to have an identity shift. No “wannabe” ever made it big. At some point, they either gave up on their dream or stopped being a wannabe.During my research as a graduate student, I studied the difference between wannabe entrepreneurs and successful entrepreneurs. None of the wannabes actually saw themselves as entrepreneurs. They hadn’t had the shift where they fully identified themselves as entrepreneurs. Conversely, successful entrepreneurs saw being an entrepreneur as who they were. That identity shift happened as they began investing money into their entrepreneurial goals, and as they made the conscious decision - this is WHO I AM. Your identity follows your behavior. Therefore, this shift won’t happen until after you begin acting into the new role you plan to play. You don’t start with faith. You choose to have it. It’s a conscious choice, followed by behavior. Then identity and motivation follow.3. Stop hiding itWhat other people think of you is none o f your business. If you want to remain mediocre at something forever, keep it to yourself. If you want to become extremely successful, then openly share your dreams with your loved ones.Harmonious passion is about living an integrated, rather than a compartmentalized, life. The more aligned you become on who you are - the more congruent all areas of your life will be. Moreover, the more honest you are with the person you intend to be, the more support and love you’ll get from friends and family. They’ll also hold you accountable to your dreams and goals if they see you not making progress. How can you involve key people into this quest? How can you connect this passion with other areas in your life?4. Create a vision that works“It doesn’t matter what your vision is. It matters what your vision does.” - Peter M. Senge, The Fifth DiscipleWhat’s your vision?More interestingly, what does your vision cause you to do?Rather than worrying so much about what your vision is, you s hould be thinking about what your vision is doing. What is it doing to you? What is it doing to your environment? Your behavior? Your relationships? Your aspirations? Your income? Your impact? Are you and your external world transforming in powerful and inspired ways? If so, then your vision is working. If not, then adjust the vision to ensure it focuses on execution and transformation. That’s the most important consideration - is your vision working?5. Practice privately 5-10x than you perform publicly“Private victory always precedes public victory.” - Stephen CoveyKobe Bryant was always the first person in the gym and the last to leave. He worked harder than anyone else. He had more coaches and trainers. He was always pushing his own limits and perfecting even the smallest facets of his skillsets. When practice becomes the game for you, that’s when you’re about to explode in your progress. Why?Because practice is all about perfecting skills. True practice and learning force you to deeply examine the chinks in your armor. You are only as strong as your weakest link. In a world that tells you to ignore your weaknesses, true practitioners do the opposite.6. Carry a notepad everywhere“I take notes like some people take drugs. There is an eight-foot stretch of shelves in my house containing nothing but full notebooks. I trust the weakest pen more than the strongest memory, and note taking is - in my experience - one of the most important skills for converting excessive information into precise action and follow-up.” - Tim Ferriss, in the blogpost, How to Take Notes Like an Alpha-GeekYour mind can be like a well. It takes pumping the well for a while to get the ideas and creativity flowing. However, if you get the well pumping, then all of you have to do is keep it going. You can get to the point where the ideas and insights keep coming coming coming.Your responsibility at that point is to take notes. If you ignore those subconscious promptings, they will stop coming. Taking note, adjusting your mindset, and shifting your behavior is HOW you pump the well. It’s how you keep the ideas flowing. You must continually be shifting the connections and model.7. Quickly address mistakes, or you’ll stop learning“It is tempting to think that just because one understands certain principles one has “learned” about the discipline. This is the familiar trap of confusing intellectual understanding with learning. Learning always involves new understandings and new behaviors, ‘thinking’ and ‘doing.’ ” - Peter M. SengeLessons are repeated until learned.According to Brain-scan studies, if you do not address a problem in 0.25 seconds after a mistake is made, then you probably won’t do anything about it. You’ll shrug your shoulders and keep going. This is really bad for learning. You’re just more deeply engraining the negative behavioral cycle into your brain.Performance experts have found that if you address your mistakes immediately, you can learn more in 5 minutes than most people do in 30 days. If you simply address your problems and the spot, correct them, and learn better ways, then you don’t have to continuously repeat the problem.8. Face your pain, or it will be buried and stunt your growth“If you don’t know how to control your emotional reactions and there’s a refractory period, and you let that emotional reaction linger for hours or days, it turns into a mood. So you say to someone, ‘What’s wrong with you?’ The person says, ‘I’m in a mood.’ Then you say, ‘Why are you in a mood?’ They say, ‘Well, this thing happened to me five days ago and I’m having one long emotional reaction.’ If you keep that refractory period going for weeks and months, you’ve developed a temperament. If you keep that same refractory period going on for years, it’s called a personality trait.” - Dr. Joe DispenzaLearning and growing are emotional and often painful experiences. Sometim es, things happen in life that you didn’t plan for nor were you responsible for - traumatic experiences.Whether caused by you or someone else, when you go through a painful experience, that experience can only become one of two things to you. It’s either going to become a long-term problem, or it’s going to become a core strength. When you experience a powerfully emotional experience, you experience what is known as a “refractory period” - which is your physiological response to an experience. That period should ideally be short, but often people don’t cope well with experiences. Sometimes. the refractory period of a certain experience can last years. For example, you have a really intense experience and that experience changes you. Until you directly face and walk-through that issue, it will always be a part of you. In fact, you will remain the same person emotionally until you learn that lesson. I know people who had rough experiences as teenagers who are still subcons ciously playing out the same emotional experiences from that episode. They haven’t learned or changed since that event. This is a painful and ineffective way to live. This is not to diminish the pain and suffering that people have gone through, or the negative ripple effects that have since been created. It’s simply speaking to the truth of the matter - the only way out is through. You can’t avoid it. You must face your deepest fears or you’ll always be a slave to them.In a recent interview, Josh Waitzkin described an experience where he almost died. He was doing underwater breathing techniques and accidentally passed-out. Rather than allowing a long refractory period to occur, he said that he was back in the water 2 days later. He didn’t want that traumatic experience to become a lifelong weakness. He didn’t want to train his body to live in the trauma. He walked straight into the trauma and pain and fear and quickly re-established his relationship and control over the s ituation. Therefore, that experience became an incredible blessing and learning and experience.9. Have fun milestones“Celebrate small victories often. Mourn failures quickly. Do what’s necessary without fanfare.” - Chris BroganA key component of mastering anything is creating fun, engaging, and relevant milestones throughout the learning process. For example, if you’re trying to learn a new language, buy a plane ticket for 3 months in advance so you can test your new language skills in an immersive way. Plan to eat at fun restaurants and to see interesting things. Reward yourself in a way that links directly to what you’re trying to master.10. Invest big on yourself“Beyond a certain point there is no return. This point has to be reached.” - Franz KafkaDreamers invest their money and time into distractions while doers invest their time and money into their dreams. The financial investment will make it real to you. This is a huge part of “ignition” (see #2 above). Wh en you start acting in ways that excite you, and in ways that reflect the future identity you’re trying to create - then you begin identifying with that future self here-and-now. You signal to yourself who you are by the actions you take. Your behavior shapes your personality and identity. This is one of the most important moments you can have. That moment where you say, “Whoa, I’m actually doing this!”That moment is deeply connected with the moment where you say inside of yourself, “I can be one of those.”11. Ignore everyone“For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you.” - Ira GlassKeep your eyes only on the people who inspire you. You have good taste. The worst thing you could do is worry about what your peers think. When people begin worrying about what their peer s think, their motivation becomes clouded and confused. They stop doing their work for the internal reasons that got them excited and they begin trying to fit in, or to be impressive to the wrong people.12. Focus on challenges and quests, not time“Deep practice is not measured in minutes or hours, but in the number of high-quality reaches and repetitions you make - basically, how many new connections you form in your brain.” - Daniel CoyleIn his book, Living with a SEAL, Jesse Itzler tells the story of being inspired by a certain Navy SEAL and consequently inviting him to live at Itzler’s home for a month. Itzler admitted being in a personal rut and wanted to shake himself out of his routine.Day 1: “SEAL” asked Itzler, “How many pull-ups can you do?” Itzler squeaked out eight shaky pull-ups.“Take 30 seconds and do it again,” SEAL said. 30 seconds later, Itzler got on the bar and did six, struggling.“Take 30 seconds and do it one more time,” SEAL said. 30 seco nds later, Itzler got on the bar and did three, at which point his arms were exhausted.“Alright, we’re not leaving here until you do 100 more,” SEAL stated. Itzler was puzzled. “Alright, we’re gonna be here a long-time. Cause there’s no way I could do 100.” However, Itzler ended-up completing the challenge, doing one pull-up at a time. Thus, SEAL convinced Itzler that he could do way more than he thought he could.Like Itzler who shattered a mental barrier by completing 100 pull-ups, you too can get out of your rut by pursuing tangible objectives. The concept is: Do something and don’t stop until it’s complete, no matter how long it takes. If it doesn’t suck, we don’t do it.You can apply this principle to anything. You can do a homework assignment and just do it until it’s complete. You can write an article and stick-to-it until it’s published. You can do 100 pull-ups, or run 5 miles, and go until you’re done. Who cares how long it takes? The best practice is objective-based. Not time based. In fact, you want to eliminate your sense of time as much as you possibly can.Living in the dimensions of time is a 9â€"5 mindset. Living in FLOW is about dissolving into timelessness. It’s about enjoying what you’re doing for the sake of it. One of the fastest ways into flow is by pushing yourself to achieve certain things, daily. If you’re weightlifting, your “reps” or “objectives” could be to do a certain lift perfectly a number of times. If you’re a musician, it could be playing a certain song or part of a song 5â€"10 times perfectly in a row.Make it a game. But more than anything, focus it on successfully completing a certain objective. Don’t build your practice around time and effort. We live in the results economy - where results are what matter more than anything now.13. See how much you can do in a single day“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” - T. S. EliotEzra Taft Bens on was a religious leader who simultaneously served as the 15th United States Secretary of Agriculture during both presidential terms of Dwight D. Eisenhower.Benson grew up on a farm in Whitney, Idaho. One day in 1915 at the age of 16, he was hired by a neighboring farmer to thin a field of sugar beets. He took his short-handled hoe in hand and looked out over the sugar beet field. Here was the thought that came into his mind:“If I work as hard as I can, I wonder how much I can do in a day?”He started just as the sun came up and worked almost without stopping until sun down. Then he realized how much he could do. He had thinned a full acre of beets in just one day! Which was an insane amount for one person. When the farmer saw what Benson had done, he was shocked. He dropped two silver dollars and two five-dollar gold coins into Benson’s hand. Benson could hardly believe his eyes! 12 dollars at that time, and for a 16 year old farm boy, was a small fortune. As he walked home he was walking on air and he felt like the richest man in town. The question Benson asked himself is a question YOU need to ask yourself. How much can you get done in a single day?How much can you get done today? This isn’t about being busy, but rather, about being productive. It’s also about pushing your own limits, and seeing how far you can actually go. Most people are trying to see how little they can do. If you’re one of those people who can see how much you can do, yeah …14. See how much you can give in your relationships“You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.” - Zig ZiglarWhen you’re driven to give and to serve, you become more empathetic and relevant. Because it’s about them and not you, you can actually listen and discern what they need. You’re not calculating your next move. You’re not thinking about what you’re going to say next. Instead, you’re actually listening. You’re actually discovering what other people need.15. Deep focus, then deep reflection“I think of the learning process of an undulation of deep learning and periods of surfacing and reflection.” - Josh WaitzkinSuccess is not a marathon. Instead, success is a series of sprints. You push yourself beyond your limits and then you rest/recover.Some sprints may be a week. Other sprints may be a few years. Whatever the case, you need periods where you surface from the intensity and reflect on what the heck just happened. You get feedback. You open yourself up to trusted friends and mentors. You re-adjust your path if you need to based on what you’ve learned and based on the post-reflection process.Recovery, resting, and reflection are essential to becoming brilliant at what you do. If you’re not prioritizing these, then you’re on a path to burnout. Moreover, if you’re not taking time to reflect and recover, there’s a good chance you’re going the wrong direction without even knowing it.16. Never stop learning“Don’t believe your own press.” - Joe Polish Wayne Gretzky is considered the greatest hockey player to ever live. Yet, he was known by his teammates to continually look like a fool. He was always trying new things in practice and falling all over the ice. He failed a lot more than his teammates. The problem with success is dull your motivational edge and drive. In order to keep yourself sharp, you need to never stop pushing your boundaries, not matter how good you become. The moment you stop learning, testing, and trying is the moment you go backwards. If you don’t use it, you’ll quickly lose it.17. Avoid luxury like the plague“We love comfort. We love state-of-the-art practice facilities, oak-paneled corner offices, spotless locker rooms, and fluffy towels. Which is a shame, because luxury is a motivational narcotic: It signals our unconscious minds to give less effort. It whispers, Relax, you’ve made it. The talent hotbeds are not luxurious. In fact, they are so much the opposite that they are sometimes called chicken-wire Harvards. Top music camps - especially ones that can afford better - consist mainly of rundown cabins. The North Baltimore Aquatic Club, which produced Michael Phelps and four other Olympic medalists, could pass for an underfunded YMCA. The world’s highest-performing schools - those in Finland and South Korea, which perennially score at the top of the Program for International Student Assessment rankings - feature austere classrooms that look as if they haven’t changed since the 1950s.” - Daniel CoyleFor most people, “success” is not really about the work itself, but about the luxuries success can give you.World-class performers keep things simple. They aren’t afraid to enjoy luxuries and make good money. However, when it comes to their work, they are simplistic. They maintain the scrappiness and drive as they had when they were first starting out. Quick Guide to Networking and Job Searching on Facebook

Quick Guide to Networking and Job Searching on Facebook Quick Guide to Networking and Job Searching on Facebook 2When it comes to finding a job, Facebook might not be the first site that comes to mind. And why would it? It’s not exactly like job postings regularly bubble through the news feed between that cute cat video and that TMI post about an acquaintance’s recent battle with the flu. But if you’re not using Facebook in your job search, you’re missing out on a huge opportunity- thousands of  Americans have used Facebook to land the job of their dreams (or at least a job). Here are just a few ways you can use Facebook to your advantage throughout your job search. Heres a quick guide to networking and job search on Facebook: 1. Get your profile and settings ready to go If you’re going to use Facebook for professional purposes, it’s important you update your profile so that it’s as professional and illuminating to potential employers or recruiters as possible. A few things to look out for: Privacy Settings. When you’re really trying to balance the personal and professional aspects of your profile, it’s best to create a separate list for professional contacts and categorize them accordingly. This way, you can choose to limit their ability to see incriminating photos from that wild vacation or, say, that recent political rant, which may be unnecessarily alienating. Or, you knowjust stop posting that kind of stuff on Facebook. Keywords. The great thing about Facebook is that it can connect a thriving population of professionals, regardless of locale. But it can’t connect you with that recruiter from across the country if your profile doesn’t have industry or position-specific keywords. Do your research, and find the most relevant ones for you. If you are looking for a job in a specific locale, make sure you’ve added your city and state, too. About Me = Elevator Pitch. You don’t actually have to be in an elevator to give a great elevator pitch. Take the time to develop one of your own that succinctly describes what you do and how you do it, sprinkling in a few interesting and unique details to really make it pop. This will serve the function of fleshing out your About Me so that all of your contacts have a good sense of what you do, and it will also be convenient to have as you do more of a traditional search in parallel. 2. Learn What Networking Means in an Online Environment The great thing about Facebook is that it can get you one step closer to the kind of in-person relationship building that most often gets people jobs, and it can do this on a greater scale than you could ever get using only face to face routes. To really take advantage of all that Facebook has to offer, it’s best to use a complementary in-person and online networking approach. Update your status. In the pre-Facebook days, lighting up your network meant announcing to everyone you knew friends, colleagues, family, acquaintances that you were on the hunt, whether by phone, letter or a nice chat in the grocery store. While those methods still work just fine, it’s much easier and just as effective to broadcast the specifics of your hunt via status updates on Facebook. Don’t go overboard, of course, but the more you provide information or even humorous updates about your hunt, the more likely you will be to come to the top of a contact’s mind when something at their own work opens up. Join the right groups. From alumni groups to professional interest groups, take advantage of every network that’s remotely relevant to your hunt. In alumni groups, reach out directly to alumni who work at companies that interest you, and nurture the relationship. In professional groups, exchange insider tips, share your advice and monitor the feeds for jobs posted by community members. Remember to think beyond your immediate industry to complementary industries, too. Like influential people, pages, and companies. Not only will this keep you up to date with the latest job openings and news coming out of your industry or dream company, but you’ll also find yourself a helpful community on the site pages, allowing for more relationship building. What’s more, many influencers and influential groups also sponsor, organize, or speak at conferences or events, which you’ll want to attend for both educational and networking purposes. Merge the online and in-person. Job seekers that really use Facebook successfully will have a dual online and in-person strategy for relationship building. Start by commenting on other people’s comment threads on pages or boards, and reaching out to them directly to let them know what you do and how much you admire their work. When you’re both attending the same conference or networking event, you’ll have a much easier time connecting something you should then follow up with online post-event. 3. Know and Promote Your Brand When you get that classic question, “What would you say you do here exactly?” it’s important that you have all your selling points ready to go. Even better: establish your personal brand so well on Facebook ahead of time, no on even has to ask you that question. Choose a professional photo and stick with it throughout your search. How to Broach the Topic of Remote Work During a Job Interview

How to Broach the Topic of Remote Work During a Job Interview How to Broach the Topic of Remote Work During a Job Interview When it comes to job interviews , there are certain actions you want to avoid. For example, it’s usually a bad idea to bring up salary during an interview unless you’re specifically asked to share your thoughts on the matter. Similarly, you’ll want to avoid badmouthing your former (or current) employer during an interview, as doing so will make you look petty and unprofessional. The topic of working remotely, however, is more of a gray area. These days, a growing number of companies are embracing the notion of telecommuting in an attempt to offer workers more flexibility. And if you’re looking for a job that will allow you to   work remotely , it pays to figure out whether that option is on the table before you get too deep into the interview process. The question is: When can you bring up telecommuting in an interview, and how do you do it? Usually, you can get a sense as to whether a company is open to remote work arrangements by doing some research ahead of time. Job sites like   Glassdoor , for example, publish company reviews, and if you read enough of them, you might come upon mentions of things like   flexibility   and working from home. Of course, just because a company lets   some  workers do their jobs remotely doesn’t mean you’ll get that option. If you’re seeking a management role, for example, the company might insist that you do your job onsite, since it’ll involve overseeing other people. Still, it pays to go into the interview process with a basic sense of what the company might be open to. It’s OK to ask about remote work arrangements in a job interview, but the key is to do so unobtrusively. A good way to broach the topic is to ask the question on a general basis, along the lines of: “Do most of your employees work full-time from the office, or is there a lot of telecommuting?” Posing the question this way will make it sound like you’re asking from a place of curiosity rather than demand. If your interviewer responds by saying that remote work is largely supported, you might choose to leave things at that. After all, if most of the company’s employees get to telecommute, why would you be the one exception? That said, if not being able to telecommute is a major deal-breaker for you, you might follow up that general question with a more loaded, “Do you think the role I’m applying for is conducive to a similar arrangement?” It’s not an outlandish question to ask, and with any luck, you’ll get the answer you’re looking to hear. That said, you might choose to qualify your question by asking: “Do you think the role I’m applying for is conducive to a similar arrangement   once I’m up to speed ?” This way, you’re making it clear that   you’re  flexible, and that you don’t necessarily expect to be given the same freedom that company’s seasoned workers have earned. One final thing: While an interviewer might be somewhat non-committal about remote work during an initial meeting, once a job offer is presented to you, you have every right to ask that the company spell out the terms of its remote work policy as it will apply to you. This way, you’ll be in the best position to decide whether to accept that job or go after a role that’s more flexible.

Where The Federal Jobs Are - Department of Homeland Security Where The Federal Jobs Are - Department of Homeland Security Where The Federal Jobs Are Department of Homeland Security “WHERE THE FEDERAL JOBS ARE” FEDERAL AGENCY SERIES PART 3 â€" WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY (DHS) Website: dhs.gov/ Secretary: Jeh Johnson (2013 â€" present) Headquarters: DHS is located in a number of facilities throughout Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia. Certain DHS components also maintain Regional, Field and/or International Offices. Future Headquarters: A consolidated DHS headquarters to be located in Washington, D.C. has been plagued by construction and budget delays. At this point, only the U.S. Coast Guard has moved in; other DHS agencies are still located at more than 50 sites across the D.C. area. As many as 17,000 DHS employees are expected to eventually work at the site. The campus may be completed by 2021, five (5) years ahead of the long-delayed schedule. On the other hand, continued delays may leave the eventual completion uncertain. Mission: DHS has five (5) Homeland Security missions: To prevent terrorism and enhance security To secure and manage the Nation’s borders To enforce and administration Nation’s immigration laws To safeguard and secure cyberspace To strengthen national preparedness and resilience to disasters Strategic Goals: DHS’s Fiscal Year 2014-2018 Strategic Plan focuses on implementing the goals laid in it its 2014 Quadrennial Homeland Security Review. The DHS Organization Structure: DHS has many operational and support components. When DHS was created, specific functions formerly performed by other federal agencies and departments were integrated into it. For example, certain responsibilities formerly within the Departments of Treasury, Justice/FBI, Defense, Agriculture, Energy, and GSA were integrated or dispersed into new DHS components. Responsibilities of the U.S. Customs Service (formerly a part of the Department of Treasury) and the Immigration and Naturalization Service (formerly part of the Department of Justice) were integrated into various DHS components. The Federal Emergency Management Agency, Transportation Security Administration, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Secret Service were also wholly integrated into the new agency. DOMESTIC NUCLEAR DETECTION OFFICE. Prevents nuclear terrorism by continuously improving capabilities to deter, detect, respond to, and attribute attacks, in coordination with domestic and international Department Challenges: DHS is a large and complex organization. Since its inception, it has been the subject to a massive number of Congressional oversight hearings. By some accounts, DHS answers to over 100 different congressional committees and subcommittees, perhaps resulting from the oversight structure that existed prior to merging the various entities into the new Department. A 2014 Report of the DHS Office of Inspector General identified major challenges in the Department and individual components â€" the majority arising from the effort to combine and coordinate diverse legacy agencies into a single organization capable of a broad, vital mission. A 2015 U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) Report concluded that DHS made progress in improving and integrating its management areas, but continues to face mission-related acquisitions, human capital, and financial management challenges. In 2015, DHS was rated in “last place” among the 19 large federal agencies in recent Partnership for Public Service’s “Best Places to Work in the Federal Government.” While its score as a parent agency was the lowest among large federal agencies, several DHS subcomponents received high scores. For example: among 320 agency subcomponents, the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office scored 53; the U.S. Coast Guard scored 80; and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service scored 86. At the lower end of the rankings, 9 DHS subcomponents scored lower than #300 of the 320 rankings for subcomponents. Those entitles included: The Office of Intelligence and Analysis (#320); Secret Service (#319); Immigration and Customer Enforcement (#318); Science Technology Directorate (#316); Customs and Border Protection (#314); Transportation Security Administration (#313); Federal Emergency Management Agency (#309); and the Directorate for Management (#306). You Can Consciously Choose Your Corporate Culture

You Can Consciously Choose Your Corporate Culture You Can Consciously Choose Your Corporate Culture Did you have the luxury of consciously choosing your companys corporate culture from the start? Or, are you like most small and mid-sized business leaders who did not consciously decide what kind of a corporate culture should be developed and maintained in your company. If so, then the culture that you have, just developed on its own. Its a given that in any work environment a corporate culture will develop. The coming together of people in a workplace guarantees the development of a workplace culture. The question is whether the corporate culture that develops serves the best interests of your customers, the satisfaction of your employees, and your organizations future progress and continued success. Sometimes, you luck out and it does. And, sometimes you need to consciously decide how to make your culture better support the attainment of your business goals. Consciously determining the corporate culture that will best serve your interests and goals is a priority in organizations. So is communicating that culture daily by your actions and the behaviors that you reward and recognize. Assessing that culture periodically, to see how youre doing, is the third critical component in consciously shaping your corporate culture. Getting in Touch with Your Current Corporate Culture The first step in understanding what your current corporate culture looks and feels like to employees and your other stakeholders is to assess the state of your current culture. You can do this in a variety of ways that are laid out in how to understand your current culture. Additionally, keep an open ear and listen to what employees are saying, talking about in their stories, or complaining about gives you a lot of information. So will a periodic employee satisfaction survey. Checking in with new employees to learn about their experience of joining your company is useful, too. Then, depending on what you discover, you can make plans to change the culture if its not emphasizing whats important for your business. One Component of the Culture Changed When you think about changing your organizations culture, you dont always have to think on a massive scale or about total organizational change. A few persistent people can make powerful changes with commitment and persistence to any aspect of your corporate culture. Youll be able to relate to this example for sure. In one company, managers and other attendees had developed the habit of arriving late at meetings. This dishonored the time of the meeting participants who came on time and extended the time of every meeting, usually causing the next meeting scheduled in the conference room to start late, too. This habit of running late interfered with the start of the attendees next meetings, too. Grousing about the culture of lateness went on for years until a couple of brave managers decided to change the rules. Henceforth, they said, all meetings would start on time, end on time and anyone who was late was responsible for their own catch up outside of the meeting. And, any decision made by meeting participants, even without the input of the late arrivers, would hold. Oh, and by the way, every meeting would have an agenda, distributed 24 hours before the meeting, or these key managers would not attend. Change was painful. Meeting participants resisted change. Employees showed up late, failed to distribute agendas and no meeting ever had the people needed for a decision in attendance at the beginning. But, rather than caving to popular pressure, a committed group of employees honored the rules and moved forward. Within months, just prior to every scheduled meeting, youd see a scurrying in the halls as people rushed to show up for their meeting on time. They also developed the habit of ending the meetings 5-10 minutes early so people with back-to-back meetings could attend their next meeting on time. Additional rules in the company about meetings changed, too. Meetings did not have to last an hour. Agendas were written to allow people who only needed to attend part of a meeting to leave when their input was complete. People were prepared - although that was the next battle - employees began canceling meetings on the spot when participants came unprepared for the discussion Because they had related material and meeting minutes in advance, they were expected to come prepared. 7 Tips on How to Bring about Cultural Change In the example, a few committed people persisted and they changed the companys culture. From this story, a number of tips about how to consciously choose your corporate culture emerge. These include: An employee needs to decide that the organization needs a different approach. The employee should find an ally or two to support the change he or she wants to make. The employee needs to gather input and lay out the ground rules about the way coworkers want the environment to work - from a late culture to an on-time culture, in this case.Communicate the new expectation to all and stick with it through all of the testing and change resistance that is thrown in their path by less committed coworkers. Make the stated consequences occur. When the change has been thoroughly integrated, look at what else about the workplace or that particular activity in the workplace can continuously improve. In this case, they improved team meetings in other ways.Stick with the change. This is one element of a workplace culture that costs employers billions of dollars every year in lost productivity, rework, and hard feelings. You can apply these steps to other elements of your culture, or starting with your senior team, you can consider consciously choosing the entire corporate culture for an existing organization. Since few organizations consciously shape their corporate culture from their founding, most are changing the culture that has transpired. With this in mind, see more about how to consciously change your corporate culture. You can teach employees about how to create the culture that you need to accomplish your business goals.

This is the most insane way to be smarter, confident and resilient

This is the most insane way to be smarter, confident and resilient This is the most insane way to be smarter, confident and resilient That critical voice in your head. Always telling you how you’re screwing up. Always putting the worst-case-scenario front and center. We all have it. (I call it  â€œLefty.”)You’re hearing a lot these days about how to turn down the volume on your critical inner monologue. (Um, sometimes from  me, actually.) But let’s try looking at it a little differently for a sec, shall we?What if you don’t need fewer voices in your head - what if you need  more  of them? There’s plenty of evidence that the right voices in your head can make you smarter, more confident and more resilient. When you want to muster your energy or self-control for a challenge, you might say, “I can do it.” And if that’s what you’re saying, well, I’d reply, “No, actually. No, you can’t.”Because here’s what’s crazy:  research  shows talking to yourself using the word “you” is more powerful than using the word “I”:Altogether, the current research showed that second-person self-talk strengthens both actual behavior performance and prospective behavioral intentions more than first-person self-talk.So a voice in your head that seems to be another person actually has more power to get your keister moving  than “you” talking to “you.”So pull a few extra chairs up to your mental table. We’re putting a Brain Trust together - but they’re all in your one brain. Here are the three voices you need chattering away in your head …The voice that  makes you resilientYou need a cheerleader in your noggin. No, pom-poms and short skirts are not required. Who’s someone that  has always believed in you? Who always had your back? Someone who believed in you more than you did. That’s the voice you need to keep you going when things get hard. And where’s the proof that you need a cheerleader? Well, it actually comes from what would seem to be the total opposite of a cheerleader - a Navy SEAL.Those guys are pretty much the epitome of  grit. And one of their secrets to persistence is the  positive voices in their heads. I cover the research in my upcoming  book. From  Barking Up the Wrong Tree: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Success Is (Mostly) Wrong:A Navy study revealed a number of things that people with grit do - often unknowingly - that keep them going when things get hard. One of them comes up in the psychological research again and again: “positive self-talk.” Yes, Navy SEALs need to be badass, but one of the keys to that is thinking like “The Little Engine That Could.” In your head, you say between three hundred and a thousand words every minute to yourself. Those words can be positive or negative. It turns out that when these words are positive, they have a huge effect on your mental toughness, your ability to keep going. Subsequent studies of military personnel back this up. When the Navy started teaching BUD/S applicants to speak to themselves positively, combined with other mental tools, BUD/S passing rates increased from a quarter to a third.I know what some people might be thinking:  â€œI’m not an elite military operator  fighting terrorists, so how is this relevant to me?” Because grit is grit, bubba.Positive self-talk  doesn’t just work for guys with guns, it also works for employees and managers in offices:Manz (1983, 1986, 1992) and Manz and Sims (1989) have suggested the potential of self-talk as a self-influencing tool for improving the personal effectiveness of employees and managers. Various studies in a number of different fields have provided support for the relationship between an individual’s self-talk and performance.(For more on the subject check out my book,  Barking Up the Wrong Tree: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Success Is (Mostly) Wrong.)Alright, so you’ve got a supportive cheerleader chattering away in your head saying, “You can do it.” Awesome. But what if it’s not an issue of resilience? What if the cha llenges ahead require extra brainpower?Oh, we’ve got a voice for that too …The voice that makes you smarterYou know this voice pretty well: it’s your own. But you actually need to talk  out loud  to get the boost. When older adults  think out loud, intelligence scores shoot up dramatically:Performance gains on this task were substantial (d = 0.73 and 0.92 in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively), corresponding to a fluid intelligence increase of nearly one standard deviation. But maybe you’re not an older adult. Doesn’t matter. Keep talking  out loud. It creates a huge boost in your ability to  remember  things you read:The production effect is the substantial benefit to memory of having studied information aloud as opposed to silently.Want to  learn a new skill? Keep yakking:… self-talk is a technique which mostly improves concentration. Self-talk is more effective for novel tasks rather than well-learned tasks; because it is easier to improve at the early steps of learning. (To learn the four rituals neuroscience says will  make you happy, click  here.)Alright, you’ve got two voices going and now you’re grittier and smarter. But what if the problem isn’t about improving performance? What if you just don’t feel good about yourself? Maybe you’re feeling  guilty or you just have low self-esteem. Third voice, coming up …The voice that makes you feel better about yourselfEverybody always wants to improve self-esteem. If people  just felt more confident,  they’d be better at their jobs, be better leaders, and kids wouldn’t smoke, drink, take drugs, or get bad grades.Well, too bad they’re wrong. Research shows self-esteem doesn’t cause all those good things. It’s just a side effect of healthy behavior. So artificially boosting it doesn’t work. From  Self-Compassion:In one influential review of the self-esteem literature, it was concluded that high self-esteem actually did not improve academic achievement or job performance or leadership skills or prevent children from smoking, drinking, or  taking drugs. If anything, high self-esteem appears to be the consequence rather than the cause of healthy behaviors. What  does  raising self-esteem do? It probably increases  narcissism. So what do we need instead of self-esteem?Self-compassion. Stop lying to yourself that you’re so awesome. Instead, focus on forgiving yourself when you’re not. In my upcoming  book  I talk about why self-compassion beats self-esteem.From  Barking Up the Wrong Tree: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Success Is (Mostly) Wrong:So why does compassion succeed where self-esteem fails? Because self-esteem is always either delusional or contingent, neither of which lead to good things. To always feel like you’re awesome you need to either divorce yourself from reality or be on a treadmill of constantly proving your value. At some point you won’t measure up, which then craters your self-esteem. Not to mention relentless ly proving yourself is exhausting and unsettling. Self-compassion lets you see the facts and accept that you’re not perfect. As famed psychologist Albert Ellis once said, “Self-esteem is the greatest sickness known to man or woman because it’s conditional.” People with self-compassion don’t feel the need to constantly prove themselves, and research shows they are less likely to feel like a “loser.”And that leads us to our third voice: Grandmom. You don’t need the booming voice of self-esteem in your head. You need that warm, forgiving voice of Grandmom telling you that, yeah, you screwed up, but we all do. It’ll be okay. From  Self-Compassion:Practitioners first instruct patients to generate an image of a safe place to help counter any fears that may arise. They are then instructed to create an ideal image of a caring and compassionate figure … The training resulted in significant reductions in depression, self-attacking, feelings of inferiority, and shame.(To lear n more about how to increase self-compassion, click  here.)You’re tougher, smarter and you feel good about yourself. All three of you. So let me round this up and we’ll also learn why the voices in your head can be much more important than the voice  that talks to others …Sum upHere are the three voices you need talking to you: The Cheerleader: If positive self-talk helps Navy SEALs get through training, it’ll help you get through  the workday. Talk out loud: You might look weird doing it, but it can make you  smarter, improve your  memory and help you learn  skills faster. Grandmom: You screwed up. And Grandmom’s soothing voice told you it was okay. Give her a permanent rocking chair in your skull. We all know that how you talk to others makes a big difference.  Fast talkers  are more persuasive.  Repeating yourself  makes you more influential.  Swearing  does too. Put all of those  together … well, that’s probably overdoing it.But even talking a little crazy can make a big difference in your life. Do you  babytalk  with that special someone? Well, that kind of adorable silliness is associated with better relationships. So don’t be afraid to be a little whacky. Next time you’re out getting sake and sushi with the one you love, before you get that all-important parking validation and head out the door,  don’t be embarrassed  to say, “I wuvs you so vehwee vehwee much.”But the voice (or voices) that’s most important is the one that’s always with you: the one (or many) in your head. Get those good voices  talking so they drown out that critical one. Make sure they outvote the jerk that’s bringing you down.As researcher Kristin Neff explains in her book,  Self-Com passion:Who is the only person in your life who is available 24/7 to provide you with care and kindness? You.Join over 320,000 readers. Get a free weekly update via email  here. This  article  first appeared in 2014 on  Barking up the Wrong Tree.
